Intel refers to its AMD64 implementation as '?Intel64' previously named '?EM64T'. The architecture is AMD64-compatible and Debian AMD64 will run on AMD and Intel processors with 64-bit support. Because of the technology paternity, Debian uses the name 'AMD64'. Intel (a competitor of AMD) obviously won't use AMD64 name for its 64-bit CPU, that why they came up with EM64T, and later renamed it to Intel 64. In some Intel mainboard, during the BIOS bootup, you still can see the word 'EM64T' appears in your monitor.

Debian :: Starter Image For Intel Core 2 Duo?
Dec 14, 2010Can someone tell me what the architecture of iMac Intel Core 2 Duo is? I am trying to figure out which of the following images given on the webpage below to download:[URL].This is the list:
[alpha][amd64][arm][armel][hppa][i386][ia64][mips][mipsel][powerpc][sparc][s390][source][multi-arch]
I think there are two different images (namely i386 and ia64) for intel-based systems, right? Which one should I download for my Intel Core 2 Duo? Is this a 64-bit architecture? Should I use amd64?

General :: Intel Celeron Processor 32bit To 64bit?
Jan 31, 2011On my 2 year old laptop I have an Intel Celeron Processor (The one made in June something of 2008) and last night I finally decided to tear it apart. My reasoning was, that I am going to buy a new laptop soon (I want a 64 bit system ) and lo and behold, my celeron processor has 2 cores on the chip itself. I ran several software tests on it in Linux (mostly just profiling and etc.) then I ran a full diagnostic on it and turns out that the second core was never used in any of it. So I looked over it through a magnifying glass and found a pin that was blocking a section from passing anything to this other core. I pulled the pin out and popped my processor in my laptop. Windows refused to boot at first except into Safe Mode because of a hardware change. It was there that my PC was re-evaluated and while previously I had a 3.5 out of 5.0 according to Vista, I know have a 4.1/5.0 thus Aero now was enabled. I then tried something crazy, I popped in the Arch64 net-install disk and VIOLA!!! It loaded and installed Arch64 successfully. Thus, I converted what was a 32 bit processor into a now 64 bit processor by (carefully) removing a pin. After doing research it seems other people found this out too and am wondering to myself, if Intel created this cheap of a 64bit processor, why didn't they market it like that and/or use this as their low-end 64 bit processor? It's all very fishy to me and I really don't know what to make of it.
As an update, I have re-soldered the pin on and Windows still sees the 2nd core. Arch64 however refuses to boot because it's trying to boot 64bit instructions on a 32bit processor again. It seems that since Windows saw that it was there, it has loaded a new driver (some weird 'Intel Blah blah blah' [didn't write it down and don't feel like rebooting, sorry] ) that wasn't loaded before. It's still running Vista 32bit (NOT going to upgrade), but it still sees that the other core is there.

Server :: Which Intel Processor To Run A Server On - Xeon Or Core I5
Aug 23, 2010I would like to run my own server, and I'm thinking of buying a dedicated machine to run it on. I checked out the dell website for a cheap machine to run it on (I don't need high performance - just a personal file server running a few hard drives, and a web/mail server). I noticed that they have some cheap models in their server line that are as cheap as a desktop. Compare:
[URL]
The main difference I see between the desktops and the servers is the use of the Core or Xeon processor, and also, the servers tend to have lower RAM.if I am looking for value, should I opt for a low end desktop or a low end server to run a personal server? Also, what advantage does the Xeon processors and Dell server line have over the desktop models that make it better for running a server?
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Blurry Projector Image With Intel GMA
Oct 11, 2010Here are the details:
Acer Aspire 5315-2681 notebook
Intel GMA 965 adapter
Ubuntu 10.04.1 (Lucid)
Not sure what resolution the desktop is, but should be 1280x800
Fn+F5 does nothing (2nd display notebook hotkey)
ANDsome sort of SHARP projector
Projector resolution should be 800x600
This is the info from lspic:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
(There is a sticker on the computer that says Mobile Intel GMA X3100, however.)
When I booted up the computer with the projector attached my bootloader appeared on the wall but not on the LCD. When I logged in my desktop appeared properly on my computer and is duplicated on the wall. However the wall image is very blurry. Part of the lower image is cut off and the right side is too short and there is a green band on the right edge a half dozen pixels wide.
When I booted (dual boot) into windows XP I got the same thing. Then I installed the proper drivers for the graphics adapter (they had not been installed because I hadn't used XP for anything but updating the BIOS) and the image lined up neatly and fit properly, and I could set the display to extend my desktop (instead of duplicate) it on the projector image. (This is what I would like to do under Ubuntu).
I'm concerned that my VGA controller doesn't have the right drivers or is set up incorrectly, but since I'm new to Linux I have no idea how to fix it.

Debian :: Hogs Memory And Processor Time, Which Slows Down The Responsiveness Of The System As A Whole?
Oct 6, 2010I'll often run iceweasel for watching videos via flash (hulu, ..., et cetera) while working, in fedora I never noticed any performance problems, watching the video while using chrome for browsing, gedit for editing, et cetera, everything was responsive. Though, now on debian running iceweasel for the same purpose hogs memory and processor time, which slows down the responsiveness of the system as a whole, making it difficult to use other programs.I'm curious how I should go about troubleshooting this issue, and what diagnostics might help me find the solution.

Server :: System Image Of Intel Server RAID1?
Aug 2, 2011Debian 64 Intel
I have an Intel server, which has it's two SATA HDD's in 'Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology 5.4' RAID1 volume. How to proceed with a system image in case two of those SATA HDD's fail at the same time? Should one take the first HDD of RAID1 volume, connect it to another machine and execute:
Code:
# ddrescue /dev/sda1 /media/External/image_of_first_hdd /media/External/log_of_first_hdd
* HDD from the problematic RAID1 volume would be recognised as /dev/sda1 behind new machine
* /media/External/ is a mount point for large external HDD in the new machine
* log_of_first_hdd would be the log file
.and then take the second HDD to another machine and execute:
Code:
# ddrescue /dev/sda1 /media/External/image_of_second_hdd /media/External/log_of_second_hdd
how to make system image using ddrescue in case disks are in 'Intel Embedded Server RAID Technology 5.4' RAID1?
